That’s why the Computer Business Applications (CBA) program at Golden West College teaches a full range of state-of-the-art technology application courses that are relevant to business careers in almost every industry.

Coursework in this department covers everything from fundamental business and communications skills to specific proficiencies in Microsoft Office applications like Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint. The program is designed to lay a broad foundation for professional success in public, private, governmental, educational, health, manufacturing, and industrial employment environments that rely on state-of-the-art computer technology.

The CBA program at Golden West College utilizes Microsoft Certified Application Specialist-approved courseware, allowing students to achieve national certification at the Core and Expert levels. Golden West College is a member of the Microsoft IT Academy, employing a specific curriculum to further reinforce skills relevant to Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification.

A certificate or associate degree in Computer Business Applications is your ticket to bold opportunities in this burgeoning field. Golden West College is proud to offer one Associate degree and three Certificates in this field:

Computer Business Applications — Associate in Arts (AA) Degree & Certificate of Achievement:
The Computer Business Applications major sets a foundation for career success by covering key concepts of computer literacy. Students will learn how to effectively use a computer to process data, manage folders and files, customize the Windows environment, work with hardware and printers, compose various business documents, and much more. Successful completion of this program prepares students for the Core level of the Microsoft Office Specialist Exams (MOS) and the Expert level MOS for Word.

Business Information Worker I – Certificate of Competency & Noncredit Certificate:
This certificate pathway is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in a variety of business environments. Coursework covers critical knowledge and skills demanded in today’s workplace, including keyboarding proficiency, Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, information systems basics, business communications, and human relations/customer service. With a solid foundation in Microsoft Windows and Office, as well as digital and web literacy skills, the business information worker brings efficiency and productivity to the workplace.

Microsoft Office – Certificate of Specialization:
Graduates of this certificate program gain the tools to launch a business career with a comprehensive working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite. Students who have obtained this certificate demonstrate proficiency in a variety of critical tasks, including composing correspondence, creating spreadsheets, managing databases, and creating presentations. Successful completion of this certificate will help students prepare for and pass the Microsoft Office Specialist exams. This Certificate of Specialization also represents a stepping stone for students wishing to continue toward the Computer Business Applications Certificate of Achievement.

Certified Business Professional: CPS/CAP Certificate Holders Option – Associate in Arts:

  • Describe the dynamics of the systems life cycle in order to communicate and troubleshoot with information technology professionals, from analyzing information systems requirements to the ongoing maintenance and security phases of the internetworked enterprise.
  • Develop procurement principles for furniture, equipment, and supply acquisition to ensure quality, to control costs, and to ensure that new technology and ergonomics standards are incorporated into the work environment.
  • Identify and describe the key terms used in computer hardware, systems, and configuration; in document layout and design; in software; and in management of physical resources such as work area use, maintenance, and ergonomics.
  • Explain the management of information throughout the records cycle, including security, integrity, and confidentiality.

Certified Business Professional: Professional Legal Secretary Certificate Holders Option – Associate in Arts:

  • Effectively use a computer to process data, manage folders and files, customize the Windows environment, and work with hardware, printers, and various software applications.
  • Analyze and record business transactions in ledger account form and post to a general ledger; and/or prepare accounting forms and statements, such as income statements and balance sheets.
  • Analyze spreadsheet data and create charts and graphs.
  • Outline the philosophical foundations, sources, and trends of American law; demonstrate a general understanding of the basic legal rights and duties involved in the areas of substantive law.

Computer Business Applications – Associate in Arts:

  • Identify and describe terminology relating to the operation of the computer and effectively use a computer to process data, manage folders and files, customize the Windows environment, and work with hardware, printers, and various software.
  • Analyze spreadsheet data and create charts and graphs.
  • Manage large workbooks; use advanced sorting and filtering techniques; and create charts, diagrams, and templates in Excel.
  • Compose various business documents, such as letters, reports, manuscripts, and memorandums.

Computer Business Applications – Certificate of Achievement:
